Meteorologist and Red Bull X-Alps athlete Honza Rejmanek writes a regular column for Cross Country magazine. In the May/June 2013 issue he explores tongues and ramps of wind.

He writes:

Wind does not establish itself in complex terrain in a nice even manner. Here it is helpful to apply metaphors such as tongues and ramps.

Flying or soaring on such a ramp can be a strange sensation. Fly upwind and you encounter more headwind. Fly downwind and you can fly out of the wind altogether. It is almost like flying into a wind shadow of an invisible hill.
