At the end of July, California’s governor Arnold Schwarzenegger pledged to save an additional $656 million from his budget to help the state’s cash crisis. $14 million of the savings will come from the closure of up to 100 of California’s 279 state parks, which could affect hang gliding and paragliding sites in the area. State parks director Ruth Coleman said closures will begin after Labor Day (7 September), but the state is seeking partners, including cities and counties, to take over some parks.
