The LiveTrack24 service created by the Manolis Andreadakis, who was also part of the team behind the PG Forum website, has been around for a while.
It allows pilots to use a device to send information to a central server, which can then be displayed on a map allowing others to follow their position.
It has been used successfully by many competitions and if you have flown in one of these events you will already have been handed one of the simple GSM trackers used.
Until now most individual pilots using the system have made use of software on their smartphones to update the server with their position, although lately varios have started to add this functionality.
The major disadvantage of using your smartphone is, especially after a long flight, you may land to find you have no power left for the retrieve.
The answer to this now is to buy a standalone GSM tracker. Recently the LiveTrack24 website has started selling trackers and we were sent one to test.
