Red Bull X-Alps 2013: Race start + Chrigel Maurer video interview
7 July, 2013
The Red Bull X-Alps 2013 kicked off today in the centre of Salzburg.
Thirty-one athletes from 21 countries ran out of the central square, destination Monaco.
Race favourite Chrigel Maurer said he was relaxed and feeling fine, despite a late night party in one of the hotels near the athletes’ campsite.
He said conditions looked favourable for flying but that low cloudbase and a head wind could make it a tricky cross country day.
He expected to make it to the top of the 1,287m Gaisberg in 1hr20mins. The Gaisberg is the first turnpoint.
The race is over 1,000km long this year and will take in 10 turnpoints, criss-crossing the Alps and heading west all the way to St Hilaire de Touvet before turning south.
Cross Country’s Hugh Miller will be reporting on the race for Red Bull at Redbullxalps.com/news.
