Flymaster Avionics have released version 1.17 of their firmware for the B1 Nav vario / GPS unit for paragliding and hang gliding.

It contains thermal-core mapping, using a black ball in the navigation wheel to show you where the strongest climbs were and therefore to locate the thermal core. It also has very clever route optimisation software for competition pilots, which plots your optimal route to the turnpoint cylinder, rather than its centre, on screen for you and allows you to shave valuable minutes from your task time.

The version also allows improved navigation of start gates and has several new user-defined fields: Vario/AltGain/Dist.Edge/Arrival next/Arrival Goal/Dist.Thermal/Altimeter2.

Flymaster have also changed the automatic flight-start detection criteria: now it responds to an average speed of above 5 km/h, whereas before it was an momentary speed of above 10 km/h. Pilots can now manually delete flight log items, and there is a choice of speed units (km/h, miles/h or knots) as well as a direct ‘Goto’ option in the waypoints list.

Upgrades can be downloaded from the Flymaster-avionics website.
