Thermal Flying by Burkhard Martens
A new edition of Thermal Flying has been published. The long-awaited second edition has been revised and updated and is now nearly 300 pages long.
Written by German author Burkhard Martens the book is a comprehensive guide to the art of thermalling and XC flying.

Burkhard said: “There’s a lot more in this book than in the first edition. There is more input from expert pilots, new pictures and illustrations, plus more detailed explanations of coring, soaring technique, the venturi effect, cloudbase height and thermal lifespans.”
As well as more than 500 diagrams and photographs, the new edition features articles from some top European pilots on how to fly better. Peter Achmuller, Daniel Tyrkas, Oliver Teubert, Achim Joos, Ulrich Prinz and Bruce Goldsmith have all contributed.

Published in hardback the book covers all aspects of thermalling and cross country flying.
Originally published in 2007 the first edition of Thermal Flying was a worldwide bestseller in both German and English. It was also translated into Spanish, Italian, French, Japanese and Russian.
The author, ‘Burki’ Martens, was born in 1962 in Lower Saxony, Germany. After working as an environmental engineer he worked in the paragliding industry from 1994 to 1997 before running a flying school for six years. In 1998 he learnt to hang glide. Since 2003 he has worked as a freelance paragliding instructor, journalist and author.
