Made to launch from tricky spots: Nova's Bantam X

Nova launch Bantam X

Nova have introduced the latest version of their hike-and-fly paraglider, the super small, 11m² Bantam X.

The Bantam series is known for its short lines. The Bantam X takes this even further with a pilot-canopy distance of just 3.2m. Nova say this opens up new launch possibilities with “only minor compromises in glide performance”.

Nova developed the wing to prioritise launch characteristics so pilots can launch anywhere with maximum flexibility. They say it is often a challenge in alpine terrain to find enough space to lay out a wing and the compact nature of the Bantam X means a lower risk of lines snagging on rocky ground. Nova added, “throw-and-go take-offs are easier with the wing and are a logical and effective launch method in some wind”.

In flight, Nova describe the Bantam X as having exceptionally high roll stability with much more dampened control input response compared with previous Bantams.

The Bantam X is available in a single 11m² size and weighs 1.5kg. Nova say it requires a high level of piloting skill, despite its high damping. The wing is not certified and Nova say the small size means it is “on the edge of what can be certified as EN-D”. The short lines impact certification manoeuvres such as the exit from full stall which is why Nova “decided against the certification process”.

Nova team pilot and Red Bull X-Alps athlete, Aaron Durogati, said: “The super-short lines make it very easy to launch in any terrain.” He also said the wing flares incredibly well for its small size.

The Bantam X is available for order in limited quantities.
