Paragliding World Cup 2024: Cameli, Turkey
2 August, 2024, by Cross Country | Photographs: PWCAThe next round of the Paragliding World Cup kicks off in Çameli, Turkey on 3 August. The prestigious event brings together World Cup pilots from across the world to compete over the breathtaking landscapes of Yaylacık Mountain and its high plateaus – about 60km to the north east of Oludeniz.
Çameli has been a prominent location for paragliding events, with Yaylacık Mountain serving as an official launch site for over a decade. The site has successfully hosted numerous competitions, including Pre-World Cups and the Turkish Nationals, making it a prime location for the World Cup.
Yaylacık Mountain, standing at 2,130m is conveniently accessible by road and features meticulously maintained launches covered with artificial grass, suitable for all wind directions.
Ninety-seven pilots including only five women are signed up to fly what is the third event in this year’s World Cup calendar.
The first competition of the season was in Interlaken, Switzerland in May and saw some spectacular flying through the Swiss Alps. The second leg took place in El Yelmo, Spain at the end of June and was spectacular for a different reason when scores of pilots came down with a severe stomach bug which saw pilots throwing up in the air and several hospitalised for dehydration. Organisers will be hoping for a smoother ride in Turkey.
After Turkey, the World Cup will fly in Gourdon, France (24-31 August) and then in Monroe, USA (7-14 September) before finishing the 2024 season with the prestigious Superfinal in Roldanillo, Colombia (4-15 February 2025).
This year also sees a PWC Asian Tour event in Bir, India from 2-9 November.
The competition in Turkey will be extensively covered online, featuring daily updates, live tracking, live scoring, and live commentary. All results and coverage will be available on the official Paragliding World Cup website and Instagram channel. The event runs from August 3-10.
