Hono’s superfinal masterclass

Honorin Hamard won the Paragliding World Cup Superfinal in March – and in great style, flying task 5 on his own and winning. It’s the second time Hono, 32, has won the Superfinal in two years. Only two other pilots have won the PWC season or Superfinal since the Paragliding World Cup started in 1992: Jimmy Pacher (1994, 1997); Chrigel Maurer (2005, 2006, 2007); and Aaron Durogati (2012, 2016). Ruth Jessop asked Hono about some of this year’s highlights.

Hono, congratulations. How was it?

We had six good, yet fairly difficult tasks. The weather wasn’t great compared to previous years, lots of storms, humid, hot. We were lucky to get the tasks in.

They changed the cloud-flying rules which seemed to work well. Now pilots are allowed to go up the side of the clouds. Everyone seemed to stay in the gaggle, so we didn’t have pilots breaking away and flying in cloud. 

What were you happiest about this year?

In 2019 I didn’t even make it into the top 100! I promised myself if I ever returned...
