Seeing the world, and flying it. That is what I want.

And that is why I left the narrow path of the purist hang glider pilot some years ago and branched into paragliding. Obviously, a light bundle of cloth is a more convenient travel accessory than a long, heavy and fragile package.

From South African cross country to Greek islands beach soaring, my backpack travel glider has served me well. But when logistics allow, the hang glider is still my choice. Flying unassisted in exotic places is the ultimate adventure.

Unfortunately, it often yields a lousy ratio of quality flying to logistical hassle. Instead, imagine the luxury of being put on launch, briefed on the site, guided on a long flight, and finally picked up on landing to be driven to the nearest watering hole.

That luxury is enjoyed worldwide by para tourists, but seldom by their hangie counterparts. The hitch is, of course, you have to bring your glider on the airliner.

So when Wills Wing’s Facebook page announced that Dustin Martin would run hang gliding tours in Brazil with glider supplied, I immediately bit the bait…
