X-Pyr announce largest field of athletes ever

23 January, 2024

The 2024 edition of the X-Pyr will have the largest field of participants on the start line yet, with Ben Hodgson (ZA) being the first ever athlete to represent the African continent.

The 2024 edition of “one of the toughest adventure races in the world” will have 48 teams taking part. Three of the four 2022 edition finishers will make a return – Maxime Pinot (FR), Pierre Rémy (FR) and Simon Oberrauner (AT).

Former four-time champion Chrigel Maurer (CH) has decided not to defend his title. This means for the first time since 2012, the race will have a new winner.

The X-Pyr organisation say: “Sadly, no women applied to take part,” but they hope that more will be inspired to participate during future editions.

The race will start in Hondarribia, Spain on 23 June 2024 and traverse the Pyrenees via nine waypoints, finishing on the Mediterranean coast. Athletes can be on the move for up to 14 hours a day, and the first into goal wins.

Fans can follow the race on the website which will have athletes’ positions, in 3D, on a full map alongside pictures, videos, and interviews.
