The race director of the Red Bull X-Alps, Christoph Weber, has launched a new online contest dedicated to hike-and-fly.
The site, www.hikeandfly-xc.com, is aimed at pilots who want to record their hike-and-fly adventures and compare them with others.
Christoph said: “The idea is to score hiking and flying in the same way as other online XC contests do it. But on our site we include the hiking up to take off and if you land somewhere or climb somewhere else, or take off and land, then that doesn’t interrupt the adventure.”
Christoph and tandem pilot and instructor Anselm Rauh are behind the project. “We had the idea last year after the X-Alps,” Christoph said.
Soft-launched a few weeks ago the site is now open to all.
“The idea is to give people a chance to share their hike-and-fly adventures, which in our way is the purest way to paraglide,” Christoph said.
“The X-Alps influenced the idea – I think all hike-and-fly has been strongly influenced by the X-Alps – and I hope some pilots who want to demonstrate their X-Alps potential will use this platform to show what they are able to do.”
The scoring is similar to other online XC leagues. “It’s the same as the DHV XC league for open distance, out-and-return and so on. Hiking has to be done with all the equipment and without use of mechanical help – no wheels, cable cars or so on.”
