Over the long Easter weekend, 1 – 5 April 2010, hang glider and paraglider pilots gathered in Bassano del Grappa, a town on the edge of the Italian Dolomites, for the Aeroclub Montegrappa‘s Monte Grappa Trophy.
The competition was accompanied by a large trade show and exhibition, and for pilots and visitors from 26 nations was a great kick-start to Europe’s coming flying season. With other sports on offer such as climbing, Nordic walking, guided tours and kite-flying there was plenty to amuse non-flyers as well.
Despite less than ideal weather over the five days, two good tasks were run (101.9 and 97.7 km for the hang gliders, and 71.5 and 59.3 km for the paragliders).
Manfred Ruhmer (Laminar Z9) lifted the hang gliders’ trophy, flanked on the podium by fellow Austrians Robert Reisinger (T2C 144) and Manfred Trimmel (Combat L 13.8). Kathleen Rigg (GB) was top female hang glider pilot.
Overall top paraglider pilot was France’s Luc Armant (Ozone), with another French Ozone pilot, Yann Martail in second and Italy’s Luca Donini (Gin) in third. Top female was Katarzyna Gruzlewska (PL, Axis). The Italin Südtirol team were the highest-scored team.
