Law change for foreign paragliding instructors in France

Sunday 23 August, 2009

‘The whole tutti-lutti!’ World Record paragliding distance holder Nevil Hulett takes us on the classic Tour de Lac in Annecy.

A change in the law in France means that non-French paragliding and hang gliding instructors with students in France must now register and apply for an annually renewable licence.

In the Haute Savoie area, which includes popular sites like Annecy, Chamonix, Morzine and le Grand Bornand, foreign instructors must register with the Jeunesse de Sports in Annecy before they can legally bring groups to the area.

If the licence is granted the instructor can work on exactly the same basis as a French instructor. The change is to try to reduce the number of accidents involving foreign instructors and students.

If a student has an incident which involves a rescue the instructor will be asked for their licence. If an instructor doesn’t have one they may face a €15,000 fine and up to one year in prison.

Edit: This article was edited for clarity and factual content on 11 March 2010. The original article said only the Haute Savoie area was affected – in fact it’s the whole of France.
