You want to go flying but your significant other wants a ‘normal’ holiday this year – like the beach.
What to do?
Meteorologist and Red Bull X-Alps pilot Honza Rejmanek has the answer. Pick an island where there is also good flying!
In his latest Meteorology column he explains exactly how to do that.
Perhaps the most important consideration when choosing a tropical island for a flying/family vacation is the topography.
Ridge soaring in shorts is nice, but for those who wish to thermal or go XC in shorts it might be worth investigating which islands provide a sufficiently protected lee.
An island as small as 20km across reaching heights of 2km can be sufficient for creating a protected lee for thermal flying.
Under such a scenario most of the air will split and go around the island rather than over it.
This is definitely one worth reading an remembering, so that next time someone close suggests heading to the beach for two weeks you can surprise them. “Hell yeah! Let’s do it!”
