GoPro unveil two new cameras

16 September, 2024, by Tarquin Cooper

GoPro, the original action camera for pilots and adventure enthusiasts, has unveiled two new cameras – Hero13 Black and a no-frills 4k camera, the Hero. The flagship camera is an all singing and dancing upgrade that features 5.3K 60 frames per second video, and Emmy® Award-winning HyperSmooth stabilisation.

New features include a new “Snap and Go Magnetic Latch Mounting” coupled with a ball joint that can be used instead of the traditional screw mount for a much quicker and simpler way to attach the camera.

It also has a more powerful battery and shoots slow-mo at 400 frames per second at 720. But what really sets it apart are four add-on lenses (purchased separately) – an ultra wide lens with a 177º field of view, a macro lens for close ups, an ‘anamorphic’ lens that gives a cinema feel and an ND filter that lets you create motion blur within shots.

“This year’s two new GoPro cameras are inspired by and built for the GoPro Community,” says GoPro Founder and CEO Nicholas Woodman. “Hero13 Black features four new interchangeable lens mods that Hero13 automatically detects and adjusts its settings for, magnetic latch mounting, GPS, and a more powerful battery that provides longer runtimes and improved thermal performance. And then there’s Hero, the smallest, lightest 4K GoPro ever with a screen that will appeal to new and experienced users with its rugged, ultralight design and impressive 4K image quality.”

With the launch, GoPro will be hoping to recapture some of the share of a market it once dominated. That market is fiercely competitive. DJI is expected to launch the Osmo Action 5 Pro while there is also an anticipated launch from Insta360 whose 360 cameras have proved popular with pilots in recent years. It is now almost five years since GoPro launched its 360 camera, GoPro Max and there is no sign of an upgrade or replacement to that. It seems the camera-maker is focusing on what it has always done best.

GoPro Hero13 Black and Hero are priced at £399 and £199 in the UK.
