Airborne’s nanolights are superlightweight microlights that fall into the sub-70kg category, and the company say they are really growing in popularity, due to their simplicity, low cost and the fact that they are so easy to transport and can be put together in 15-20 minutes.

Airborne make two nanolights: the V-Lite’s wing can be flown as a hang glider, without the powered trike part at all; the T-Lite’s wing, the Core, is specifically for powered flying although of course you can switch off the motor and enjoy the thermals and conserve your fuel.

Because the nanolights launch and land slowly, they only need a small field to fly from.

Airborne have recently started supplying the T-Lite with the Polini Thor 190 engine with electric start. The engine weighs just 15.3kg but provides 27hp at 7,400rpm, so its more powerful than the 22Hp Bailey four-stroke engine it used to come with, and still relatively quiet, say Airborne.
