Supair’s Skymate system had everyone talking – and it’s fair to say it split opinion. But like concept cars at car shows, the Skymate provided a great talking point – in this case about the role of gear and safety.
Safety was the starting point for the Skymate, which was developed by Supair’s Laurent Chiabaut and perfected by Roman Barthélémy, engineer and pilot (pictured). Laurent, who is also chair of the Paraglider Manufacturers’ Association, noted that statistics show that 75% of serious accidents are the result of auto-rotation where pilots do not deploy their reserve. This can often be because pilots black out or freeze.
