Neo have identified localised wear on certain webbing straps on a limited number of Bikini tandem harnesses that have been subjected to particularly intensive use, typically exceeding 800 launches. They are reminding owners to carry out regular inspections.
“This wear is caused by repeated friction during reverse-launch procedures,” they say. The photo below shows an example of a damaged strap.
Neo say the cases mainly involve harnesses used for professional tandem operations and other high-frequency applications. “To date, inspections carried out on the affected harnesses have not identified any failure likely to result in the opening or structural failure of the harness, nor any condition that would compromise its compliance with the applicable certification requirements,” they say.
Nonetheless, Neo are recommending pilots to carry out inspections every year or around every 150 hours of flight and after any significant impacts.
“During inspections and periodic servicing, particular attention should be paid to the condition of the webbing, stitching and load-bearing connection points. We also remind users that carabiners must be replaced after 500 flight hours or five years of use, whichever comes first.
