Dates for this season’s New Zealand Paragliding Open have been announced.
Round One will be held over eight days between 2- 9 January 2010 in Nelson, South Island: “The undisputed sun capital of New Zealand” according to organisers. Pilots can expect good flying in the mountainous Alpine terrain.
Round Two will take place on the North Island (20 – 27 February) and will see pilots flying over the sub-alpine terrain and flatlands of Rotorua.
Entry is restricted to 50 pilots with 12 places reserved for international pilots. A further 10 wildcard entries may be awarded at the organisers’ discretion.
The event is an FAI Cat 2 competition. The New Zealand Paragliding Championship will be awarded at the end of Round Two. The prize pool currently sits at $7,000 NZ.
Organisers say January and February is “a great time” to visit New Zealand for flying. Rotorua especially is a major destination centre with good connections to Auckland and accommodation for all budgets.
Non-flying activities include dedicated mountain bike parks and mineral thermal pools.
