Nova have released a new version of their popular lightweight Doubleskin, which was touted as the lightest paraglider with a top and under surface when it first came out. It’s aimed at hike-and-fly and vol-biv pilots and anyone who “appreciates an uncomplicated lightweight glider with smooth handling and a small pack size.”
So what’s new with the Doubleskin 2? It’s not lighter than the first version. Interestingly, Nova have decided not to go down that route and have replaced the soft links with conventional maillons adding 250g to the package. They say this simplifies and improves the handling of the risers.
Made from Dominico 10D, 26g/m², the lightest commercially available material, the size 19 has a stated weight of 2.63g, still light, but not the lightest in its class. The ribs are made from Porcher Skytex 27, which is known for its dimensional stability.
Also new – the Doubleskin 2 is approved for training and EN A certified in all its sizes. (The size 16 is certified EN B in the extended weight range of 80 to 95kg.)
There are also now four sizes instead of three for a more customised range of use. This means that, depending on its size, it can be a dynamic mini-wing, a relaxed hike-and-fly wing and also “a reliable thermal buddy”.
“More cells and a higher aspect ratio ensure better performance and the more complex interior and new profile increase stability,” they say.
Nova also claim that thanks to its suitability for training, the Doubleskin 2 a great first wing that gives “a great deal of confidence from the very first flight … The pilot does not have to adapt to the wing, the wing adapts to the pilot.”
They also say that glide performance and stability have been increased with an aspect ratio of 4.9. “The compact wing remains stable even in accelerated flight and glides efficiently through unstable air. In turbulent conditions, the high damping keeps everything smooth and prevents unwanted roll movement. The launch behaviour is particularly easy in a wide range of conditions and with different techniques.”
The Doubleskin2 is available in 4 sizes (16, 19, 21, 23) with a weight range of 55kg to 120kg with two colour options of orange and petrol.
