The third edition of the Wanderbird Trophy took place in Dorf Tirol, Italy on 14 July 2024, with “bright sunshine and good flying conditions”. Race day was postponed from the Saturday to Sunday, to make use of the better weather forecast.
Aaron Durogati’s and Paul Guschlbauer’s joint venture, the Wanderbird events are “hike-and-fly for all”. There are three categories: Fun, Tour and Hero.
The different courses are shown above, the route forming a triangle from Dorf Tirol to the Muthhöfen, on to the Assen Hütte, and then a third turnpoint which could be completed from the air over Sankt Leonhard.
Pilots in Fun category are allowed to use cable cars; those in Tour category can not, and Heros have further to go, extra turnpoints and no cable cars allowed. Photographic proof of reaching turnpoints is required.
81 athletes took to the start line, with 49 in the Tour category, 27 in Fun and 26 in Hero classes. Women and Men are ranked separately, and there is prize money for the winners.
