The 2015 Red Bull Dolomitenmann multi-discipline adventure race was thrashed out in the Dolomites on 12 September and won by team ‘Kleine Zeitung – Panaceo – Martini Sportswear’.
The motto of the competition, which takes place at Lienz in Austria, involves the words ‘suffering’ and ‘fun’ in the same sentence. The suffering and fun are shared by teams comprising a mountain runner, paraglider pilot, mountain biker and canoeist.
The athletes representing their sports are of a very high calibre, the list of paraglider pilots including X-Alps athletes Chrigel Maurer, Paul Guschlbauer and Aaron Durogati, still fit from their exploits in July.
The paraglider pilots’ task, as explained on the Dolomitenmann website, was the following:
It’s not only about the flying at the Dolomitenmann. There is some running to be done from the Kühbodentörl to the starting spot after taking over, and on steep, difficult terrain to boot. Only then can the first flight through the Dolomites start. After orbiting a cone, a stopover landing is made on the Moosalm. Here it is important to get your equipment under control, because there is some more running in store for the paragliders – with their parachutes on their shoulders. With the second launch, the flight to the handover to the mountain bikers in the Dolomiten Stadium in Lienz begins.
The quickest paraglider pilots were Markus Prantl, Patric Hörhager and Jakob Herrmann, and six of the top eight were flying Skywalk’s new Tonka 2 mountain wing, a lightweight EN-D wing based on the Masala2.
