The St Gervais Mont Blanc paragliding club’s 4807 Flying Light week runs from 4 – 9 October 2011.
This will be the seventh edition of this event, which is held in the beautiful Mont Blanc massif in the heart of the French Alps. A celebration of mountains and paragliding, it brings together pilots with a love of the mountains, to climb and paraglide from the peaks and hillsides in the area.
The event is sponsored by paraglider and harness manufacturers (there are twelve listed so far), particularly those specialising in lightweight equipment. These companies have sample equipment which pilots can borrow free of charge (you have to leave a cheque as a security deposit) for a day at a time.
Each evening, pilots gather for a weather briefing and to receive details of the suggested route for the following day. The ultimate, if the weather is ideal, is to hike and fly from 4,807m-high Mont Blanc, but strictly autonomously. The organisation are not offering mountain guiding expertise, and those that need to should make arrangements to hire a guide for this climb.
Beer, talks, slide shows and DVD presentations are also on the evening menu, in what is said to be a very friendly event with a great atmosphere.
On the Saturday of the same week (8 October), the Raid Chamois paraglider adventure race takes place near Annecy, just over an hour away by car, so there is alway the possibility of combining the two events.
