Spring is in the air for the Northern hemisphere and the anticipation is growing for the season ahead. As equipment from the Stubai Cup continues to dry, here is a selection of other free-flying events heading our way in March.
Paragliding World Cup Super Final
5-16 March
The Paragliding World Cup Super Final lands in Baixo Guandu, Brazil for its 13th edition. Some 125 pilots will compete in this tropical “megathermal” climate to crown the champions for the 2023/24 season.
Aeros Winter Race, Slovenia
19-24 March
The Aeros Winter Race is described as “one of the greatest hang gliding competitions” in the calendar. Celebrating its 12th edition, this legendary event “normally” enjoys excellent flying conditions in this part of Europe.
Flory Cup, Marostica, Italy
21-26 March
In a village nestled in hills beside the Asiago plateau, the Flory Cup features as a “satellite” event of the Monte Grappa Trophy. Now in its second edition, it aims to give higher priority to women and young pilots – of the 130 places available, 25 are reserved for women and 25 for those under 26.
Magic Land – Adventure Sports Festival, Wanaka, NZ
22-23 March
This first-time event brings a staggering number of airsports together in a festival atmosphere: Paragliding, acro, speed flying, skydiving, Base jumping, and more throughout the week. There’s also the chance to see F1 speedboats and hear talks from professional pilots. If that wasn’t enough, bands and DJs will accompany the celebrations on the Friday and Saturday.
Spring Fair, Sillian, Austria
March 23 – April 6
The Blue Sky spring fair returns with the promise of “endless thermals” at this Austrian testival. With snow on the mountains and sun warming up the Alps, it offers the perfect start to the new flying season. A chance to try the latest equipment from “almost all” the well-known manufacturers.
Montegrappa Trophy, Italy
March 27 – April 1
This FAI Category 2 hang glider competition will see up to 70 pilots from approximately 12 countries competing above the Veneto-Friuli foothills of Italy’s North-East Alps.
Paragliding State of Origin, Manilla
29-31 March
FlyManilla are hosting their annual friendly competition at Mt Borah, Manilla NSW over Easter. The competition features “Flying Crews” of five-pilot teams of mixed skill levels and promises some good interstate and overseas rivalries.
