“Any landing that you can walk away from is a good landing. But what if you’re injured in a crash and rescue is uncertain? If you land to help a downed pilot what should you do? What if you suspect a spinal injury and all you can remember is “don’t move the patient”? As interest in remote flying and vol bivouac epics develops, pilots need to plan ahead for when it goes wrong and learn how to medically manage a crash scene. ”

Writing in the March / April issue of Cross Country magazine wilderness medicine expert Baz Roberts explains exactly what to do in case the worst should happen and you’re far from help.

From what to carry in your ‘belt kit’ to how to treat a patient, he takes you step-by-step through how to approach a crash scene and what to do about it.

Plus, he looks at the real-world example of one pilot who went through it all. In 2012 Daniel Gravier crashed in Pakistan and took a week to get back home – he’s flying again now, and described exactly what happened.

A mountaineer, skier and paraglider pilot Baz is commercial director of Wilderness Medical Training.

Out now in the March / April issue of Cross Country magazine.
