Race founder Paul Guschlbauer in Austria

Still time to join the Wanderbird Westendorf

Places are still open at this weekend’s Wanderbird, the fast-growing hike-and-fly series of races for everyday pilots.

The event is to be held in the Tryolean village of Westerndorf for the first time this Saturday 10 August. Registration is possible on the day.

Uniquely, the race is part of the mountain biking festival of Brixental, so pilots can also enjoy live festival music and the after party – and have something else to do in case of bad weather.

Wanderbird Cup

The Wanderbird Cup concept is pitched at low airtime pilots who are new to the sport of hike-and-fly and features turnpoints that can be reached on a single glide.

At the Trophy events such as in the Stubai Valley or Paznaun Valley, participants can take part in three different categories and have as many as five turnpoints to tag.

The concept is not just about the “game”, as race co-founder Paul Guschlbauer likes to call it. Workshops, community building and a testival are also part of the programme. “We want to show people how to better connect with nature, learn to understand it better, and the events are the ideal place to meet and learn from each other,” he says.
