Applications for the 2017 Red Bull X-Alps will open on 1 July this year, according to the X-Alps organisers. They will remain open for two months, until 31 August 2016.

Applications can be made via the applications page on the Red Bull X-Alps website.

Organisers say applicants need:

• Exceptional paragliding skills
• Extensive mountaineering experience
• Outstanding level of fitness and endurance
• Proven achievements in recognised competitions
• Remarkable courage and sportsmanship – track record of own adventures and projects

The format of the race will remain the same – a 1,000km hike-and-fly race east to west across the European Alps.

However, the exact route will not be announced until nearer the race date. The race will start on 2 July 2017 and will last for two weeks.

Organisers said the race rules will also be updated: gliders must be EN-certified and harnesses must be certified with back protector.
