The FAI European Paragliding Championships 2024 are on! The competition takes place in Pegalajar in southern Spain from 21 May to 1 June and features 135 pilots from 31 countries.
The first task is on Wednesday 22 May, and 10 days of competition will follow. Pegalajar is a super interesting site with easy access along the hills and out into the flatlands of Andalucia. Expect triangles, open distance and if the day goes big – pilots heading into the big terrain towards Granada.
Cross Country is hosting the livestream on this page – the livestream is supplied by the organisers. Check back daily for updates.
The European Paragliding Championships are held every two years in a different location – and it’s not been held in Spain for over two decades.
“This is the second time that an event of this kind has been held in Spain. The last European Championships held in Spain took place in Piedrahíta in 1998”, reported the president of Spain’s National Paragliding Technical Commission, Antonio Lope.
Medals will be awarded in Overall, Women and Nations categories.
While pilots from across Europe will be sending their best pilots to compete, the French have got to be the favourites across all the categories, with Superfinal winner Honorin Hamard, current World Champion Maxime Pinot and former World Champion Pierre Remy all flying for France and competing for individual medals too.
Among the women, Constance Mettetal (FR), Red Bull X-Alps pilot Eli Egger (AT) and competition legend Petra Slivova (CZ) are surely all in with a chance of gold. Thirteen women are competing.
In the Nations, well France looks unbeatable, but never say never: there are strong teams from Germany, UK, Italy and all the Alpine nations.
However, Spain is looking for a result and they have the home team advantage. Lope said: “Spain is aiming for a place in the top three. The pilots know the place and its characteristics well.”
