Tom de Dorlodot is one of the sport’s do-ers. A Red Bull X-Alps athlete at the age of 21, he has gone on to fly at the cutting edge of the sport when it comes to adventure flying. Whether setting records in the thin air above the Karakoram in Pakistan, or exploring ancient ruins in Guatemala his passion for flight knows no bounds.
So when he was handed the keys to a brand new 4×4 as part of a sponsorship deal last year, he knew it wasn’t going to just sit in the driveway. Instead he launched the Search project, and together with fellow pilot Horacio Llorens embarked on a journey of a lifetime, travelling overland through Africa. The aim was to fly new places and meet new people. Well they did that alright.
At the end of the four month journey, which was extensively promoted on the Search Project website, we asked Tom to sit down and go through his photos for us. We asked him to choose one, maybe two images that captured for him the importance of each country they team had travelled through, and to tell us about them.
The result is an intimate, personal, and at times very funny account of travelling through Africa with a bunch of mates, a film crew, and a great big VW off road vehicle. Oh yes, and paragliders. These pilots know how to fly, and they made the most of it. Searching out secret spots in remote locations, flying the volcanoes of Tanzania, the wildlife parks of Kenya and the birthplace of humankind in Namibia.
We made it the cover story this issue for obvious reasons.
