Flying 100km XC in Thailand

Mike Moore takes off in Thailand

Mike Moore emailed us to tell us about his flight in Thailand. He’d flown his first 100km and wanted to tell the world.

What he didn’t tell us was he was new to paragliding and his personal best was only his second ever XC flight. Good going!

The thermal draws me up and away from the ridge. Another two turns and I won’t be able to get back. Time to commit. I let myself drift downwind and work the thermal hard. Steady 2-3 m/s climb. Here we go!

The cloud I’m under has formed a street, but it’s already dark and bumpy. As I head downwind, I fly over the golf resort where we are staying.

We’re three hours northeast of Bangkok and have come to Thailand from Hong Kong to try our first cross country flights by paraglider.

My first was yesterday: 27km, not bad. Flying with Alex on his Ozone Delta 2 it was hard keeping up on my GIN Atlas. Let’s see if I can improve on that today.

I hear Scott on the radio, he’s setting off too. It’s his first XC today, 28 March 2014. Good luck!

We love stories like this at Cross Country – ones that capture the core of what we do. Mike Moore is one happy man, as you can tell.

The full article, plus a mini guide to flying Thailand, is in issue 157, Jan/Feb 2015.
