Belgian open 2018 (HG) @ Tolmin | Tolmin | Slovenia

The 2018 Belgian Hang Gliding Open takes place in Tolmin, Slovenia in the first week of July.

Organisers say:

In the tradition of the Belgian nationals, we want to offer a competition for all XC pilot levels: from beginners to very experienced pilots. The main idea is to have a fair and enjoyable Cat 2 competition for everyone.

While we will not be pushing the limits of what can be done with hang gliding, we will of course ensure that the tasks are long enough to have a fair competition. Safety is high on our priority list and the inviting area allows us to set nice and scenic tasks for all experience levels”.

All Comers Open 2018

All Comers Open 2018 @ Feltre | Veneto | Italy

The British Paragliding Competitions committee have introduced a new event for 2018, the All Comers Open, which is an FAI cat 2 learning competition.

It’s aimed at pilots who have flown at least one competition before, and will take place at Feltre, Italy, from 21-28 July 2018.

Brett Janaway is meet director, and the competition tasks, which will be “challenging enough for the most accomplished pilots” will be backed up by briefings and debriefs, events and talks.

“The All Comers Open will attract PWC qualification letters and we therefore hope it will appeal to our young BPRA crew and their fellow pilots from other Euro nations, looking for a fun comp where they may also qualify for that all important first PWC season”.

Registration opens at 09:00 GMT on 3 February 2018, and organisers say:

“The approved pilot list will be ordered by time/date of registration and pilots will be invited to pay in ranked order. Registration for the competition will open on 3rd February 2018 and pilots will be invited to pay beginning 17th February”.

The Hang Gliding Pre-Worlds 2018 will be based in Tolmezzo, Friuli Venezia Giulia, in the northeast of Italy and will run from 27 July until 4 August.

Organisers say:

“The competition flying area will develop above extremely different and vast areas: from the sea to the Dolomites, crossing the flatlands, the Alps and the Prealps.  The main competition region will be Friuli Venezia Giulia, but pilots could fly also above some other regions and countries: Veneto, Trentino Alto Adige, Slovenia and Austria“.

Parafest 2018
Jul 27 – Jul 29 all-day
Parafest 2018 @ Wales | United Kingdom

Parafest, the UK’s family-friendly flying-and-music festival, is back in North Wales from 27-29 July 2018.

Mixing live music and family entertainment with paragliding, hang gliding and paramotoring, Parafest takes place at Llanbedr airfield on the beautiful Welsh coast, at the edge of Snowdonia National Park.

The event will host the UK’s only manufacturers’ trade show as well winch and aerotowing for suitably qualified pilots. There are hill-launch sites just a short drive away, and local pilots will be on hand to brief visitors.

Powered pilots have a dedicated area of the airfield to use for the duration of the event, from which they can explore the miles of unspoilt sandy beaches, the picture-postcard coastal towns and the mountains and valleys of Snowdonia.

Organisers say:

“Parafest is not just for pilots it’s for the whole family. Bring your partner, bring the kids, bring non-flying friends – you can even bring the dog!”

A purpose-built stage in the festival arena will host professional live bands who will play until midnight on the Friday and Saturday nights. Party-lovers can then head over to the Asbo Disco, set away from the camping area, where DJs will play on into the wee small hours.

British Paragliding Championships 2018
Aug 11 – Aug 16 all-day
British Paragliding Championships 2018 @ Krushevo | Municipality of Krushevo | Macedonia (FYROM)

The British Paragliding Championships is being run as a single round in 2018, and it will take place at Kruševo, Macedonia from 11-17 August.

“The British Championship will be contested as a single open competition, the British Championship Open, instead of as in previous years being contested over two open competitions, the rationale being that an increasing number of British pilots with time, family, or financial pressures simply can’t afford to attend both open competitions.

“The meet director will be Goran Dimiskovski. In line with our new FAI status as a Category 2 nation we now offer very good quality PWC qualification letters. Krushevo will be hosting the World Championships in 2019 too and so our Championship Open should be perfect for other nations’ team pilots looking for racing experience in this paragliding Mecca.

“Immediately after Krushevo there’s also a PWC in nearby Sopot, Bulgaria and Goran has offered to put on transport (5hours by coach) for those pilots interested in doing both competitions. As in previous years we expect to be joined by the Dutch for their Championship.

“Pilots registering for the competition will be required to have a minimum level of competition experience in line with previous years’ British Open Competitions. The approved pilot list will be ordered by pilots’ highest World Pilot Ranking System (WPRS) position in the past two years and pilots will be invited to pay in ranked order. Registration for the competition will open on 3 February 2018 and pilots will be invited to pay beginning 17 February”.

BGD Weightless, Slovenia, 2018
Sep 2 – Sep 8 all-day
BGD Weightless, Slovenia, 2018 @ Tolmin | Tolmin | Slovenia

BGD’s Weightless is a friendly, FAI cat 2 competition based on weight classes. 2018’s will be the first annual event, and it will be held in Tolmin, Slovenia from 2-8 September.

Up to now flying heavy has always been an advantage. This has resulted in heavy equipment and ballast for competitions. BGD would like to change all this and encourage people to fly with light equipment. Women and Men will not be separated as the weight classes will help to even up the sexes.

The BGD weightless is aimed at up-and-coming pilots looking to improve their cross country, competition experience or just enjoy a unique experience hanging out with some of the best pilots in the world. Hosted in a relaxed environment, the first event will be held in Slovenia in the famous beautiful Soca Valley.

The event is particularly suited to leisure pilots that have flown some small XCs (20km+) and have flown in one or two fun competitions, but it will not exclude more advanced pilots, who will also benefit from participation. Two-liners will not be allowed to participate and the focus will be on the B and C classes, without excluding the As and Ds.

The classes will be Overall, Sport and Leisure. Within each class there will be weight catagories of <80kg, <90kg, <110kg and >110kg.

Prizes, lectures, coaching and fun is guaranteed throughout.

HQ will be Camp Gabrje, and the preferred goal field will be just a few metres from HQ and the bar.

The event is organised by BGD and meet director Brett Janaway. Pilots can register on Airtribune

Mega Festival del Aire, Argentina @ San Pedro Airport
Sep 8 – Sep 9 all-day
Mega Festival del Aire, Argentina @ San Pedro Airport | Buenos Aires | Buenos Aires | Argentina

This Argentinean festival celebrates all things free-flight. This year it takes place from 8-9 September, at San Pedro airport northeast of Buenos Aires.

The festival’s goal is to promote the sport among non-flyers, and there are lots of airshows including PPG acro, skydiving, paramotoring, paragliding and hang gliding, free-flight biplanes and hot air balloons. The site is a flatland location so pilots should be tow qualified to fly.

The festival was born in 2016 and the first edition saw 14,000 visitors. 160 pilots took to the skies, and 180kg of food were collected to be donated locally. In 2017 the number of visitors rose to 20,000 people, with twice as many pilots and twice the weight of food donations collected.
