Canungra, in Australia’s Gold Coast region, has several grassy take-offs covering all wind directions, located on 500m high tree-covered mountain ridges.
The Beechmont launch during the dry summer months can produce early thermals even at 7am. This results in long XC flights. The records are 325 km for a paraglider and 519 km for a hang glider.
One round of the Cup will count towards a pilot’s WPRS score.
The entry fee of AUS$480 includes a full retrieve, excursions and transport system including airport transfers.

The Bright Open is a 7-day cross-country paragliding competition that will be held from 12-18 January 2019.
The competition is HGFA AAA and FAI Cat 2, and open to all pilots with a minimum of an Australia PG4 rating or equivalent.
The Flow Corryong Open 2019 is held at Mount Elliot, “one of the best alpine flying sites in Australia” and just a few thermal glides from Mt Kosciuszko, Australia’s highest mountain.
Organisers add, “The valley system makes the flying spectacular and the retrieves easy and quick”.
85 pilots maximum and no open0class wings allowed.
The NSW State Titles foot-launch hang gliding XC competition takes in Manilla from 17-23 February 2019.
“The comp attracts the best of the best from Australia and around the world, so is the ideal site for up-and-coming pilots to learn from those at the top of their game. It is also the ideal comp for newer pilots wishing to fly big air and fly big flights.”

Wings out West 2019 is Australia’s only ground-tow paragliding competition which takes place from 13-17 March 2019 in the central NSW flatlands.
A small, select gathering of just 35 pilots will be able to compete, and at the time of writing there is only one place left!
Dalby is on the Darling Downs, 2.5 hours drive from Brisbane. Organisers say, “It is the central hub of a vast cotton and sorghum growing district which provides ideal soaring conditions with an excellent road network that facilitates easy pick-ups”.
Competition headquarters is at the Dalby Aerodrome, where the Dalby Hang Gliding Club has a secure hanger as its home base.
Pilots need an intermediate/advanced rating to take part in the competition. There are places for 50 pilots, and the entry fee includes all towing fees.
The first hang gliding competition of the Australian calendar, the Canungra Classic is an eight-day, FAI cat. 2 competition. It starts on 5 October 2019.
“It will be an opportunity for aspiring competition pilots to fly with Australia and New Zealand’s best pilots. Overseas pilots are most welcome and will be rewarded with the opportunity of flying one of Australia’s challenging and premier hang gliding sites“.
Take-off is Mount Tamborine. The entry fee is AUS$300 plus AUS$30 site fee for non-members. Pilots must hold at least temporary membership to the Hang Gliding Federation of Australia.
Australia’s popular paragliding season-opener, the Canungra Cup is back. This year’s dates are 19-26 October.
The Canungra Cup is an eight-day, FAI 2 cat. comp, with scores counting towards pilots’ WPRS scores. Pilots must be IPPI4 rated or equivalent to take part, and need to be members or temporary members of the Hang Gliding Federation of Australia.
The AU$400 (Early Bird) or AU$450 entry fee includes retrieves and airport transfers.
The 2020 Forbes Flatlands Hang Gliding Championship 2020 takes place at the Bill Moyes International Airport at the beginning of January.
A practice day on 3 January will be followed by eight competition days starting 4 January.
Launch is by aerotow (the aerotow is organised by Mr Bill Moyes himself), so pilots must be aerotow qualified and bring their own tow release and bridle. HGFA membership is compulsory.
The entry fee is $350 before 7 November, $400 before 7 December, $450 at registration. An aerotow feee of $450 covers unlimited tows and 10 days’ club and site fees.
