Stubai Cup 2018
Mar 2 – Mar 4 all-day
Stubai Cup 2018 @ Neustift im Stubaital | Tyrol | Austria

The Stubai Cup takes place every year and this year’s theme is Flying Flower Power. “Love is in the air!”, say its organisers.

The three-day event combines an open-air trade show in the landing field, testival, aerial displays and a prize draw. Chrigel Maurer will be giving a not-to-be-missed presentation on the Friday evening so get there in time for that.

Pilot briefings and weather reports will be given daily in the school, and shuttles will run from the landing field to the lifts. Pilots can then free-fly over the snowy arena before landing back at the event site.

All registered pilots are automatically entered in the Fun Cup, whose prizes include an EN-A paraglider.

Green Swamp Sports Klassic (HG)
Mar 18 – Mar 24 all-day
Green Swamp Sports Klassic (HG) @ Groveland | Florida | United States

The Green Swamp Sports Klassic hang gliding competition takes place in Groveland, Florida from 18-24 March 2018.

It’s a sports-class only hang gliding competition, with experienced pilots mentoring those with less experience. It is run by the Oz Report, who write:

“We are very excited about this competition (as well as the huge Quest Air National Series coming in April). Moyes, Icaro and Wills will all be represented among the mentors.  We’ll get to show off the changes happening at the Quest Air Soaring Center (Wilotree Park).

Sport Class competition provides an entry point for newer hang glider pilots who wish to improve their cross-country flying skills and who would like to get a taste of hang gliding competition. Competition has become very complex and this is a great opportunity to get help to learn the many aspects of competition”.

Icarus X Series (PPG), South Africa @ Zulu Nyala Lodge
Mar 30 – Mar 31 all-day

An Icarus X Series paramotor race, weekend-long little brother to the Icarus Trophy, is taking place at the end of March 2018 in South Africa.

The X series was created on the back of the popularity of the Icarus Trophy, the world’s longest paramotor race, and features four shorter-format stand-alone race events across four continents (one in the US, one in the UK, one in Australia and now one in South Africa).

“March’s race will see pilots follow a stunning 340km two-day course. Taking off on the 30th of March, participants will follow an ABC-A course, starting & finishing at Zulu Nyala Lodge, Gauteng, and will fly over some of the area’s best nature reserves and parks, giving pilots a unique view of their wildlife, and stopping at checkpoints at the Vaalkop and Buffelspoort dams en route. A properly epic & diverse triangle showcasing South Africa at its best“.

As with the Icarus Trophy, there are Race and Adventure categories. Find out more at:

X-berg Challenge 2018 @ The Border Post, Oliviershoek Pass
Apr 26 – May 1 all-day

X-Berg Challenge 2018 videoThe X-Berg Challenge four-day adventure race starts on 26 April 2018. The race sees paragliders, mountain bikers and runners racing against each other around turnpoints in the Drakensberg, South Africa.

The length of the route differs from race to race, but organisers say it will be around 90-180km in a straight line. Athletes choose their own routes to best suit their sport, taking in the turnpoints, and it’s a race to the finish.

The event is now in its sixth year, and the solo category has been won once by a trail runner and twice each by mountain bikers and paragliders.

Pilots can enter solo or as part of a team of two to four, and can mix disciplines. It’s recommended to have a dedicated supporter, but if a willing volunteer can’t be found there is a resupply service for unsupported athletes. Read about the team and solo entry combinations and more, here.

The pre-race briefing takes place on 26 April at The Border Post, Oliviershoek Pass, with race days from 27-30 April.

There is a 10% discount on the entry fee for athletes who have entered before. Registration closes 9 March 2017.
