Santa Cruz Flats RaceFancy desert racing on hang gliders?  The Santa Cruz Flats Race takes place in Arizona, USA from 15 September 2019.

Organisers say:

The Francisco Grande Golf Resort is hosting us for the 12th year. The resort allows us to park fully assembled gliders in the green grass under the shade of many trees just adjacent to the “tower” where all of our rooms are. You can sit in the comfort of your balcony and see all the gliders below“.

Canungra Hang Gliding Classic 2019

Canungra Hang Gliding Classic 2019

The first hang gliding competition of the Australian calendar, the Canungra Classic is an eight-day, FAI cat. 2 competition. It starts on 5 October 2019.

Organisers say:

It will be an opportunity for aspiring competition pilots to fly with Australia and New Zealand’s best pilots. Overseas pilots are most welcome and will be rewarded with the opportunity of flying one of Australia’s challenging and premier hang gliding sites“.

Take-off is Mount Tamborine. The entry fee is AUS$300 plus AUS$30 site fee for non-members. Pilots must hold at least temporary membership to the Hang Gliding Federation of Australia.

Canungra Cup 2019

Canungra Cup 2019

Australia’s popular paragliding season-opener, the Canungra Cup is back. This year’s dates are 19-26 October.

The Canungra Cup is an eight-day, FAI 2 cat. comp, with scores counting towards pilots’ WPRS scores. Pilots must be IPPI4 rated or equivalent to take part, and need to be members or temporary members of the Hang Gliding Federation of Australia.

The AU$400 (Early Bird) or AU$450 entry fee includes retrieves and airport transfers.

Asian Oceanic Continental Championships – test event

Bright, AustraliaIn December 2019, Bright, Australia, is to host a test event for the forthcoming 2020 Cat. 1 Asian Oceanic Continental Championships.

The test competition is open to all registered FAI competition pilots with a minimum of Australia PG4 / IPPI4 equivalent. Pilots will be selected based on Australian National and WPRS rankings.

Bright Open 2020

Bright Open 2020

This year’s Bright Open will be organised by Wally Arcidiacono in conjunction with the Australian Paragliding Squad. Members of the squad will be responsible for various aspects of the competition organisation prior to the competition start date, and any profits made will be directed back to the Australian Squad for training and coaching purposes.

Mentoring will be available, and the event will be run in parallel with the Gundowring Open using Mystic, Gundowring,  Ray’s Hill, Mt Emu and Tawonga Gap sites.

Flow Corryong Open

Flow Corryong OpenThe Flow Corryong Open takes place at Mt. Elliot in Queensland, Australia which is ” just a few thermal glides from Mt Kosciuszko, the highest mountain in Australia”.

It’s mountain flying, and organisers say “the valley system makes the flying spectacular and the retrieves easy and quick”.  Pilots need to organise their own retrieve drivers.

It’s a high-level comp aimed at experienced intermediate and advanced rated pilots. It’s the last AAA event of the Australian season, and the last chance for Australian pilots to gain Ladder points.

Overseas pilots should know about rules to do with preventing bushfires, including no smoking and no rocket flares.

Pan American HG Championships

First Pan-American Championships 2020

The first FAI Pan-American Championships and 2020 Pan-Americans are to be held at Big Spring, Texas from 2-14 August 2020.

The site is renowned for big tasks, smooth thermals, unrestricted landing areas, easy retrieval on multiple roads and consistent cu’s. The air-conditioned head quarters, hangar for setup, free water and ice cream will make life so much easier and more pleasant!

The comp will be live tracked, with Flymaster trackers provided.

The Championships are a USHPA and CIVL sanctioned Category 1 competition; USHPA NTSS and CIVL WPRS points will be awarded.

The Pan-Americans are Category 2 sanctioned; USHPA NTSS and CIVL WPRS points will be awarded.
