Monday 1 December, 2014

Cross Country magazine has been published since 1988. Now it’s expanding again – publishing an even bigger magazine 10 times a year. We answer some questions about the move.

What’s happening to Cross Country magazine?
Cross Country magazine is going from being published six times a year to being published 10 times a year. The number of pages is going up too – from 100 pages an issue to 132 pages an issue.

When’s that happening?
It will start with Cross Country 157. It will be published early January 2015. It will be the ‘February/March’ edition.

And what’s happening to Paramotor Magazine?
The last standalone issue of Paramotor Magazine was published in October – the Oct/Nov issue, number 45.

Nooooo… I love my Paramotor Magazine!
We know! So do we. We’ve been thinking about this for a year now though, and this is definitely the best way forward. We’re going to bring loads of the content from the current Paramotor Mag into Cross Country magazine – Dean Eldridge and Jeff Goin remain key columnists, for example. And then we’re going to publish it 10 times a year. Paramotoring will be a key part of the new, bigger magazine.

So you’re mixing up paramotoring and free-flight articles?
Yes. We used to do it before we launched Paramotor Magazine. Paramotoring has changed a lot in recent years, and it’s much more accessible and attractive to lots of free-flight pilots now. Plus lots of powered paraglider pilots will be interested in the technical articles we run in Cross Country. Lots of pilots fly both according to conditions – we want to reflect that.

Will paramotoring take over Cross Country magazine?
No, it’s going to be a balance. If you go to a festival like the Coupe Icare there are paramotors mixed with paragliders mixed with wing suits mixed with hang gliders – it’s going to be like that. Something for everyone while retaining our reputation for high quality, in-depth writing and amazing photography. That will never change.

I subscribe to Cross Country already. Do I have to do anything?
No. Your subscription will roll over into the new magazine. When your subscription expires your auto-renew will kick in. If you don’t have auto-renew you will have to re-subscribe.

I subscribe to Paramotor Magazine already. Do I have to do anything?
No. Your subscription will roll over into the new magazine. When your subscription expires your auto-renew will kick in. If you don’t have auto-renew you will have to re-subscribe.

Did you just say that twice?
Yes.

I bought my digital subscription directly through Zinio. What happens to me?
Zinio subscriptions bought through Zinio work on a calendar year so you get all the issues in that year. Paramotor subscriptions will be honoured with digital issues of Cross Country for the year-length of your subscription.

We encourage digital subscribers to subscribe to Zinio through our subscription website because this allows us to keep you in the loop regarding offers and email newsletters. We don’t get to see who subscribes directly through Zinio, so we can’t offer any ‘added value’ – which is an important part of subscribing to a magazine.

Will it be more expensive?
The price of a 10-issue subscription is going up, but the per-issue price is going down. A 10-issue subscription now costs £44.95. That’s £4.49 an issue, delivered to your door anywhere in the world – we think that represents amazing value.

Can you explain the new prices in full?
10 issue digital subscription: £29.95 / €38.95 / $48.95
10 issue print subscription: £44.95 / €57.95 / $73.95
Print + digital subscription: £51.95 / €66.95 / $85.95

There is a 10% discount if you tick the auto-renew box.
You can also subscribe and pay monthly – from £2.25 a month for a 10-issue digital subscription.

I sometimes contribute to one or both magazines. Who should I contact now?
The editor of Cross Country is Ed Ewing, and he’s staying the editor. His email is editor@xccontent.local. Paramotor Magazine editor Marcus King is still 100% involved in the new Cross Country too. His email is marcus@xccontent.local.

We send you news and new product information. Where do we send it now?
Send it to news@xccontent.local.

What about advertising in the new magazine?
Verity is still here. Email her at advertising@xccontent.local.

Why have you done this?
We genuinely feel that we can create a better magazine and serve our readers better. Whatever you fly, wherever you fly it, we want to have it in the magazine. Lots of pilots cross over to different sports – speed flying, acro, wing-suiting, paramotoring, hang gliding – and we want to open our door to that.

That doesn’t mean we’ll be less in-depth or have less space for things. In fact we’ll have more space and be more inclusive. And we’ll cover our sports in depth, just as we always have – all the people who contribute, write or photograph are staying involved.

We’re also answering that call of ‘More please!’. Everyone tells us two months between magazines is too long. This is our way of fixing that.

OK I’m sold. What happens if I have a problem with my subscription?
As always, drop the office an email: office@xccontent.local. Or ring us on +44 1273 256 090. Or ping us on Skype: xcmagazine.

Fine. But promise me you’ll stay heart-and-soul and won’t sell-out to a faceless corporate publisher who knows nothing about flying?
That will never happen. Cross Country has always been owned and run by pilots and always will be. Written, photographed and created by pilots for pilots. That’s us. Now let’s go flying.

Hang on, where do I sign up?
That’s easy! See our subscriptions page here.
