Italy’s Monte Avena will host the 2017 Paragliding World Championships following a vote at the CIVL annual general meeting last week.
Delegates from 41 countries met over two days to make decisions about free flight competition, including where to host various events.
- The 2016 European Hang Gliding Championship will be in Macedonia.
- The 2016 Paragliding Aerobatics World Championship will be in France.
- The 2017 World Paragliding Championship will be in Italy.
- The 2017 World Hang Gliding Class 1 Championship will be in Brazil.
- And the 2017 World Paragliding Accuracy Championship 2017 will be in Albania.
Seven bids were put forward for the hosting of the Paragliding World Championships 2017, including bids from Turkey, Italy, Austria, Slovenia, Switzerland, Portugal and Brazil.
An unofficial online poll on this website saw Turkey dominate by several thousand votes. In a clearly coordinated campaign Turkey’s bid won 10,943 votes while Brazil’s got 66.
The poll asked for ‘international competition pilots only’ to vote, but garnered a total of 18,763 votes – about 20 times the number of international comp pilots on the scene.
Italy’s also clearly coordinated polling won them 6,818 votes – 6,319 ahead of Austria’s Abtenau. The poll was unofficial and had no bearing on the official outcome.
